Building High Performance Boards During Challenging Times

More Info

Date: Tue, August 10, 2010
Location:

Fenwick & West, 801 California Street, Mountain View, CA, 94041

Description:

Pascal Levensohn is the guest speaker at the Jewish High Tech Community monthly meeting.

With venture-backed companies experiencing longer times to liquidity due to the turmoil in the capital markets, investor misalignments become exacerbated as a result of stressful management transitions, unanticipated new financing rounds, and new faces at the boardroom table who have acquired investment positions at a discount to the lead investors. Board dysfunction can destroy investor value and bring a company to its knees. At the same time, a well aligned, highly performing board can help the management team build value and avoid some of the common mistakes that venture backed companies make. Pascal will review director fiduciary duty in a practical context and address the difficult dynamics that boards face during stressful times. He will point out common characteristics of effective and ineffective directors and recommend solutions to difficult situations.

Location:

Description:

Avoiding Major Trouble: Why Private Equity Firms Must Spend More Time On Ethics

Ethics has become one of the key words over the past year, especially given the fallout on Wall Street. And regulations, both in the U.S. and overseas, now place strict curbs on many established business practices in an effort to stem corruption. The consequences for companies, both in fines and damage to reputation, can be significant, which means investors need to pay attention. But as the disclosures earlier this year in New York make clear firms are not doing as good a job as they can adhering to such policies. So what should firms be doing to ensure that they themselves as well as their portfolio companies stay compliant with not only various regulatory codes, but also just doing good business? What is the message that firms can drive home to their partners and their portfolio companies? Our panel provides their thoughts.

Barry Gonder, General Partner, Grove Street Advisors
Pascal Levensohn, Founder & Managing Partner, Levensohn Venture Partners

Wireless 2.0 -- Is the Silicon Valley "Shovel Ready"?
Hosted by: Wireless Communication Alliance

The metric for success of ARRA (American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009) is said to be largely job-creation. To that end many "shovel-ready" projects have been proposed across the country which could satisfy the ARRA success metric. This is somewhat in contrast with the Silicon Valley's entrepreneurial culture which tends to focus on technology development and market maturity, followed later by job creation.

This set of circumstances thus begs the question; is the Silicon Valley "shovel-ready" as defined under the ARRA success metrics? Can a jobs-creation program successfully fuel the Silicon Valley's entrepreneurial engine, and efficiently co-exist with a business culture traditionally focused on developing new ideas, new markets, and technical innovation? How can the federal/state government investors best align with venture capital to jointly cultivate innovation and fuel the Silicon Valley engine?

David Witkowski Vice President, Wireless Communications Alliance

VC Panel: Security Business Strategies During a Recession

More Info

Date: Wed, July 29, 2009
Location:

Caesars Palace, Las Vegas, NV

Description:

All too often we forget that economics, not any collection of vulnerabilities, exploits, or technologies, affects the practice of security more than any other single factor. Economics determines what data the attackers target, what resources we have for defense, and what technologies are at our disposal. Over the past year we've seen all aspects of the global economy affected by the current recession, and security is no exception.

Our panel of investors and analysts will present their latest findings on the current state of the business side of the security industry, and how to best thrive in a down economy. Is cyber security immune, as some like to claim, or will enterprise budgets be slashed as new technologies wither without funding? Are startups better off now, or will security innovation have to migrate back to the large vendors? Can you take advantage of the downturn to pressure your vendors for better prices and services? Does the recession create opportunities to improve security strategies? How does the economy affect the offensive side of security? As we answer these questions, our panel will also review the major security business trends for the next three years, with specific predictions on which technologies and vendors will survive, which will die, and how it all affects the day-to-day practice of security.

We all share a major concern about our nation's cyber security. Join us for Admiral McConnell's opening remarks and three very important panel discussions that will frame the situation, challenges and opportunities relevant to the importance of tying innovation to US cyber and economic security. As our nation's government establishes and staffs new organizations to address this mounting problem, these "change agents" believe there are opportunities to move forward with nimble, incremental and reasonable changes that will enable the United States to effectively deal with these major threats.

3:20 p.m. – 4:10 p.m. The Challenge: The Innovation Crisis in America—Implications for Cyber Security

The global financial crisis has exacerbated long-term negative trends undermining the foundations of America’s economic growth engine. Entrepreneurs, corporate and academic research and development professionals, and venture capitalists are inextricably linked together in this crisis. Plummeting research and development, and declines in investment and VC funding are undermining the development of cutting edge future solutions needed to protect our country’s cyber security. This perspective from two venture capitalists, a leading academic, and a successful security entrepreneur highlights the interdependence of these communities, and the implications to our country’s prospects for sustainable economic growth, new job creation, and national security.

Beyond Compliance: Effective Board Leadership for Long-Term Success

More Info

Date: Thu, October 23, 2008
Location:

Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati, 950 Page Mill Road, Palo Alto, CA, 94304

Description:

In the post-Enron era, corporate Boards have been forced to focus on compliance with an ever-growing list of regulations. Add to that reduced public confidence and the greater-than-ever focus on quarterly financial results and many Directors find themselves cast in the role of corporate police who enforce rules and require constant surveillance of their CEOs and management team. This can lead to the ultimate failure of a company as corporate leaders do not anticipate and deal with the long-term threats facing their companies.

This panel of seasoned Board experts and Directors will look at some of these threats and explore the steps that Board can take to prepare their companies for long-term success. The panel will discuss:

CEO Transition and Succession
Preparing for a Sale

Stanford University, Arrillaga Center, Stanford, CA

Description:

Levensohn Venture Partners is pleased to announce that we are co-sponsoring the IT Security Entrepreneurs' Forum in conjunction with the Department of Homeland Security, the Kauffman Foundation, and other leading venture capitalists and industry sponsors. For more information about the IT Security Entrepreneurs' Forum, please visit the conference website at http://publicprivatepartnerships.org. This one-day conference will bring together a selected group of 175 IT Security companies with leaders from the U.S. Government, the venture capital industry, and professional service providers. The Forum is an invitation-only event for investors, IT security entrepreneurs, emerging and mature IT security companies, and interested parties whose attendance at the conference would be beneficial to the selected group of participants. Many startup companies provide new and innovative solutions, but they do not have the resources, relationships or experience to successfully commercialize their products and services into government and industry markets. Ironically, government, industry and venture capital leaders are constantly looking for innovative IT security solutions. The event organizers are conducting a nationwide search to select start-up, early stage and mature companies to attend, learn and meet other entrepreneurs' from across the United States who also offer "best of breed" IT security solutions. The leaders of these IT Security companies will go through a thorough vetting process where only 175 will be selected to participate. If you are an entrepreneur active in IT Security or your company is a leader in the IT Security field, you may submit an application to be invited to attend the conference: http://publicprivatepartnerships.org/invite/. We are also reserving a limited number of spaces for interested parties whose attendance at the conference would be beneficial to the selected participants. If you would like to be part of this unique opportunity, please complete the short application on the conference website.
